dmidecode パッケージって何?
インストールされているけど何かよくわからないパッケージとして dmidecode を調べてみた.何で dmidecode かっていうと何よりまず読み方がわからなかったので…「でぃーまいどこーど」って何?っていう…
とりあえず何のコマンドが入ってるのか調べる.

コマンドは4つ.他のコマンドの名前から dmidecode は「でぃーえむあい でこーど」と読むのではないかという気がしてきた.
% man dmidecode
man を読むと dmidecode はコンピュータの DMI テーブルの内容を人間に読めるようなフォーマットで表示するツールだと書いてある.それで DMI ってのは Desktop Management Interface の略で,コンピュータにつながっているハードウェアやソフトウェアを統一的に管理するための標準インターフェースらしい.
あまり詳しく載ってないけど Wikipedia の説明.
dmidecode は DMI のコンポーネント(管理対象となるハードウェアやソフトウェア)とのインターフェース部分を使って PC のハードウェア情報を集めてくる,というツールの模様.
man を読むと同パッケージの他のコマンドも大体同じような機能のコマンドのようです.
- biosdecode - BIOS 情報を表示
- vpddecode - IBM のコンピュータの「vital product data」の情報を表示
- ownership - Compaq の「ownership tag」の情報を表示
ということで dmidecode パッケージはこんな感じのツールをまとめたものなのですね…
試しに Let's node W2 で dmidecode 実行してみると以下のようになりました.一部マスクしてあります.

ここまで情報が取れるんですねぇ… バッテリーの容量や電圧まで表示されてるし.なんか System Information の Serial Number とか PC の本体の裏にシールで張ってあるシリアルナンバーがそのまま表示されててちょっとびっくり.
何故こんなツールが標準でインストールされているのかというとどうもインストール時のログを収集するのに使う模様.インストールに失敗した時のハードウェア構成の情報とかを正確に集められるようにインストーラが使うんじゃないだろうか?
